What Every Injured Worker Needs to Know
7/4/2006

Did you know that Workers Compensation Laws protect the rights of injured workers when it comes to choosing a medical provider to treat their injuries. Why is that important? When it comes to your health you don't want to take any chances on getting the best and most appropriate care available to you. What many large employers do: Many of the local large employers have their own doctors and physical therapy departments. Did you ever wonder why? If you think that is because that is in your best interest you may want to think again. Many employers have their own facilities to keep tabs on their injured workers and are looking out for their own interests in keeping lost time accidents to an absolute minimum. Workers are lured to these facilities with perks such as providing transportation to and from the facility, going for treatments on company time, securing the timely payment of compensation/wages checks. The one question that goes unanswered is if you get the most appropriate care. Is the therapy provided by a licensed PT or PT assistant under the supervision of the PT, or are you being treated by an athletic trainer or other person without the proper credentials? Dealing with a company doctor may also put you at risk for loyalty conflicts between the company and yourself. Likewise caseworkers will work with "outside" providers as well as with company medical professionals. Loyalty of outside providers If you wonder what the loyalties are of the outside independent provider you can imagine that their only loyalty is to the injured worker. Get yourself the authorization for treatments that you really need to completely recover from the injuries sustained. Independent providers are not under pressure of company officials for an early release from treatments. Independent providers, together with your personal physician make sure that you get the treatment that you need to recover completely or to the maximum level possible. Intimidation by Employer It is understandable that many injured workers are intimidated by the manipulation of their employer since a worker's future may be at stake. THIS is where the fear should STOP and where workers compensation laws come into play for your protection, without the threats. Many workers feel an obligation or loyalty to their employer; but haven't we seen recently that loyalty of 30 or 40 or even more years does not pay off. Think of all the hardworking people that lost their pensions and health benefits after many years of dedicated loyalty. What did it get them in the end? NOTHING!
