Physical therapy no longer requires doctor’s order………………….
In May 2004, the governor of Ohio signed into law the regulation of the Direct Access Act, securing easier access to physical therapists. Previously a physician’s order was needed to consult a physical therapist. The Ohio Physical Therapy Association lobbied for years to have this restriction lifted. Finally the OPTA successfully convinced lawmakers that patients should have direct access to services performed by a licensed physical therapist, because they are properly and sufficiently trained to make professional judgment on most musculoskeletal conditions and certain neurological disorders such as stroke, spinal cord injuries etc.
The change of the law may have made the access to physical therapists easier, but that does not mean that the insurance companies have embraced this new ruling. Most insurances, including Medicare and Medicaid still require a physician’s order prior to considering payment for services provided by a physical therapist. Check with your insurance carrier about their policy.
